Abstract

This report evaluated the effectiveness and safety of allograft cruciate ligament reconstruction compared to other cruciate ligament reconstruction technologies, e.g. autografts or conservative management in five indications. Evidence for effectiveness and safety comparing these allografts with autografts was found for three of the indications.

In total, eight randomised controlled trials and one comparative cohort study met the eligibility criteria for the synthesis. The strength of evidence is very low to low. For Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstructions (ACLR), allografts may be comparable in terms of effectiveness but may be less safe due to potentially higher graft failures. For Posterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstructions (PCLR), effectiveness may be comparable yet there was insufficient evidence for the comparative safety. No evidence was found for the remaining two indications nor for comparing allografts with conservative management.
Therefore the inclusion is not currently recommended in the Austrian benefits catalogue.
