Post-meniscectomy syndrome is broadly characterised by intractable pain following the partial or total removal of a meniscus. An new treatment approach is meniscal allograft transplantation (MAT), which involves the transplant of a cadaveric meniscal allograft into the knee of a patient who has had a prior (sub)total meniscectomy. The aim of our report was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of MAT for the treatment of post-meniscectomy syndrome, compared to conservative treatment.

Overall, the level of evidence was very low. We could only identify one controlled trial, which showed superiority of MAT in some (but not all) outcomes compared to conservative treatment. In addition, we identified five case series to evaluate the safety. The complications rate in these case series was 0-38.5%.

The inclusion of MAT in the hospital benefit catalogue is therefore not recommended.
