Initially a definition of the term portal is given by which the main functionalities of portals are described. Furthermore a distinction is made between two different types of portals: a) Subject-oriented information portals and b) MyLibrary portals. The progress in this area and future tendencies are illustrated by various examples. This article focuses on the scientific context, public libraries are excluded.
